The World

What Is Calythera

Calythera is a living steampunk world — not a game supplement, not a generic fantasy setting. It's a place that runs: a working economy, a long campaign arc, a deepening archive of lore, and a podcast that takes you inside it.

Everything made for Calythera comes from inside the world. The wiki is the record. The podcast is the way in. The world was running before you arrived, and it keeps running after.

There's no magic here. There are mechanisms, pressures, and people trying to find their place in a very large machine — and the consequences when they get it wrong.

No Magic
Everything is mechanical or aetheric. If it can't be explained by gears or aether veins, it doesn't exist.
Persistent World
Calythera runs. Economies move. Consequences accumulate. The world doesn't pause between sessions.
Victorian Scale
Massive stone and iron architecture. Brass fittings, riveted panels, pressure gauges. The world is enormous and old.
Lived In
Everything shows use. The pipes are worn. The lamps flicker. The world has been running for a very long time.
Aether

The Signature of the World

Aether is the lifeblood of Calythera. It flows through veins beneath the cities, burns in lamps along every exterior wall, and hums below the threshold of conscious hearing. When it discharges or becomes visible, it arcs in fractal patterns. It is never biological. It is never described as living.

The Smell

Charged metal, and wet stone underneath. The sharp, warm bite of charged metal, fine particulate in the air, and beneath it the deep mineral smell of damp rock rising from below. Industrial from above, geological from below — always together at an active vein.

The Sight

A wall-mounted flame, purple shot through with blue. A vertical tube, four to five feet tall, housing a flame that burns purple with flickering blue inside it. Every city wall carries them. Their state is readable — steady flow, pressure variation, depletion — not decoration.

The Sound

A hum that lives under hearing. At rest, a low hum beneath the floor of comfortable hearing, present so long the people here stopped noticing it years ago. When aether moves through a valve or vent, the hum sharpens to a hiss with an edge on it. Almost a chord, still deciding how to resolve.

Be Here When It Begins

We are builders, wanderers, keepers, and seekers. The world is open now — ninety-plus entries already written, and more every week. The podcast is coming this autumn. Be here for the first one.

New episodes, TTRPG one-shots, and everything Arcane Anvil builds will land here first.
